Drexel Heritage

Est. 1903 Drexel, North Carolina American Traditional & MCM · 1903–2017

The furniture that furnished mid-century America — quality, style, and craftsmanship at every price point.

Brand History

Drexel Furniture Company was founded in 1903 in Drexel, North Carolina, in the heart of what would become the furniture capital of America. The company built its reputation on quality hardwood furniture at accessible prices, becoming one of the most recognized furniture brands in America by the mid-20th century.

In 1968, Drexel merged with Heritage Furniture to form Drexel Heritage — a combination that brought together Drexel's manufacturing strength and Heritage's reputation for higher-end design. The merged company produced furniture across a wide range of styles and price points, from accessible traditional pieces to more elaborate designs that competed with the finest American furniture makers.

Drexel Heritage's golden era — the 1950s through 1980s — produced some of the finest American furniture of the period. The company's 'Declaration' collection, designed by Kipp Stewart and Stewart MacDougall in 1953, was one of the first American furniture lines to successfully blend Scandinavian modernism with American manufacturing, and remains highly collectible today.

Authentication Guide

How to Identify Authentic Pieces

1

Look for the Drexel or Drexel Heritage label: pieces are marked with a paper label or stamp inside drawers or on the back. Pre-merger pieces say 'Drexel'; post-1968 pieces say 'Drexel Heritage'.

2

For Declaration pieces, look for the walnut construction and clean MCM lines. Declaration pieces often have a label identifying the collection name.

3

Check the wood: quality Drexel Heritage pieces use solid walnut, mahogany, or cherry with quality veneers on flat surfaces. The grain should be consistent and beautiful.

4

Examine the drawer construction: quality Drexel Heritage drawers have dovetail joints and solid wood construction. This is the clearest indicator of quality.

5

Look at the hardware: original Drexel Heritage hardware is typically brass or chrome in period-appropriate styles. Original hardware is preferable.

6

Examine the overall proportions: Drexel Heritage furniture is well-proportioned. The Declaration collection in particular has a lightness and elegance that distinguishes it from lesser MCM furniture.

The HC Perspective

Why We Seek This Brand

Drexel Heritage pieces represent the best of American mid-century furniture manufacturing — quality construction, thoughtful design, and materials that have proven their durability over 50–70 years. The 'Declaration' collection in particular is among the most undervalued MCM furniture in the market: designed by serious designers, manufactured to high standards, and available at prices far below comparable Herman Miller or Knoll pieces. HC actively seeks out Drexel Heritage Declaration pieces and other quality lines from the company's golden era.

Investment Outlook

Value Over Time

Drexel Heritage vintage pieces, particularly from the Declaration and other designer collections, represent exceptional value in the current market. These pieces are often available at prices far below comparable Herman Miller or Knoll furniture, despite similar quality and design pedigree. As awareness of the Declaration collection grows among MCM collectors, prices are likely to increase. HC considers quality Drexel Heritage pieces to be among the best value propositions in the vintage furniture market.
